Having a few days between jobs has been delicious.

I slept in. Then I made breakfast. Then I took an indoor walk on my treadmill while watching Brandon Sanderson’s introductory lecture for writing sci-fi and fantasy.

He’s absolutely delightful! Funny, smart, approachable, and he peppers his lecture with advice, observations, and personal stories.

I’m in that magical dark place between what was and what will be.

Last week I left a job that took care of me for three years. I’m preparing for a new opportunity, but parting with such a clever and good-natured group of people was bittersweet.

Today I took the time to reflect on everything I learned and all the possibilities I have to look forward to. I also refreshed my writing space.

Part of the next chapter includes refocusing on my writing and querying, and that’s exciting. I’ve got some agent pitch meetings coming up so today I’m reacquainting myself with my plot points, themes, character arcs, and comp titles. Today is for refreshing.

The Bandit Queens by @parinishroff has been the perfect read for me. I really needed an empowering, imperfect, and strong cast of women fighting injustice using the few resources they had available.

Geeta not fighting the rumors about her murdered husband are the epitome of “Let them.” Her struggle to trust, fight, and live is a reminder to take care of ourselves and the people we care about.

I’m frustrated with everything going on in the world right now. Frustrated and a little scared. This book gave me a little bit of hope.

The Bone Weaver’s Orchard by Sarah Read

Kicked off my 2025 reading with this terrifying Bram Stoker Award Winner! When boys go missing from the Old Cross School for Boys students are told they’ve run away, but Charlie believes differently. He’s seen a grey, shrouded figure shuffling through the dormitory halls at night and is suspicious of the school’s coverup.

Charlie takes it upon himself to unravel the school’s mysterious past and recover the missing boys.

Full of gothic ambiance, unlikely friendships, and entomology, (I do love me some bugs!), this was my Christmas read for the airplane. I couldn’t have picked a better book to ring in the new year.

Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass.

Written by agent Donald Maass based on the hundreds (trillions?) of books and queries that have come across his desk.

I was in the discovery draft of a short story. I got to chapter three, Stakes, when I realized I was writing a story with lots of emotion and character and zero stakes. I’d already taken everything from these people, now they were just talking. So I took another pass and added elements to raise the worth of these characters, added immediate danger, and more lose. Thank goodness there’s more happening now. A room of talking was kind of boring.

Packed with examples, advice, and end of chapter checklists. Highly recommended.
